How I Finally Stopped Buying Holiday Stuff Twice
Dude, Ok, after every holiday i would buy all the clearance goodies for next year. You know cute bags, stickers, wrapping paper, etc. It is cheap! i’ll use it next year, yeah future me!
Then next year rolls around and i either…
A) dont remember i bought anything and buy double.
or
B) forget where i put it and then buy double. See where im going.
Im trying to be a smart business owner, you know, save money, but still be cute.
But, I can barely remember what i ate for lunch two days ago, let alone what i bought and where i stashed it for a full dang year.
And it truly made me mad. Nothing will frustrate you more than buying 8 rolls of wrapping paper, go home, and you go to the spot that you put holiday things and magically find 5 rolls of wrapping paper you got cheap last year (even though you didn’t remember putting it there). Grr
So i created this very indepth, super secret, scientific system. Ready?
I stash it wherever…dude, push it in a cabinet, whatever works.
Then comes the indepth, super secret science part…I put a reminder in my phone calender about two months before that holiday next year (so july 4th, about May).
The reminder would tell me WHERE i put the things, and a rough run down of what things i had. I have one that says “green stuff for st. pat day in baking cabinet. You have green tissue, ribbon, stickers” . Because we have established…memory is not my strong suit.
And then reminder dings at me (if it don’t ding, im not looking). That is science friends!
This has helped me a TON. Because i got those things cheaper, to help with expenses. And now i remembered what i had, where i put it and in plenty of time to get it out and use them.
Future Me is ridiculously thankful Past Me figured out that really dumb…but kinda smart…little trick.
It takes me maybe thirty seconds to make the reminder.
Thirty seconds.
That’s it.
But every single year Future Amber is ridiculously thankful Past Amber took half a minute to think ahead.
Funny enough…
I think that’s what most organization really is.
It isn’t having pretty bins or matching labels.
It’s just doing one tiny thing today that makes tomorrow easier.
It’s just leaving little gifts for Future You
