WTF Is Nose Blindness (and How to Prevent It)

You get a scent. Maybe your favorite scent.
You throw it in your warmer… and then you’re mad at me because you can only smell it for one day.
“Scentsy changed their products.”
“It doesn’t smell anymore.”
“I can’t smell anything.”
I’ve heard it all. 😅
Now yes—sometimes things can be off. But honestly?
About 7 out of 10 times, it’s nose blindness.
And yep… it’s a real thing.
What Is Nose Blindness?
Let’s get a little technical (but not boring).
Nose blindness — also called olfactory fatigue — happens when your nose and brain stop noticing a familiar or constant smell. It’s actually your body doing its job, tuning out “non-important” scents so you can notice new ones.
Now let’s talk real life.
My favorite example? Trash collectors.
We all think, “How could anyone stand that smell?”
Then you talk to one and they’re like, “I don’t even smell it anymore.”
That’s nose blindness.
And the exact same thing can happen with good smells, too.
How to Help Prevent Nose Blindness
1. Rotate your scents
And no… this part matters.
If you love cinnamon and you rotate five cinnamon scents, that’s not rotation. 😂
Real rotation looks like:
- Cinnamon → Clean
- Clean → Fruity
- Fruity → Bakery
The more different, the better. Opposites wake your nose back up.
2. Leave the house
I know that sounds rude, but hear me out.
Have you ever left for a few hours, come home, and thought,
“Dang… my house smells GOOD.”
Exactly. Sometimes you just need fresh air before deciding a scent is “dead.”
3. Turn things off
Warmers. Pods. Diffusers. All of it.
Giving your nose a break overnight and turning things back on in the morning can make a huge difference.
4. Remember: everything has a lifespan
Wax, oils, pods — they all have a window where they’re meant to scent.
Some last longer. Some don’t.
That doesn’t mean anything is bad.
It’s like milk:
Sometimes it’s fine two days past the date…
Sometimes it’s bad before the date.
Life happens. 😆
The Bottom Line
Most of the time, if you think a scent “stopped working,” it hasn’t.
Your nose just got used to it.
Before you toss it or swear it off forever, try:
- switching scent families
- taking a break
- or asking me what I’d pair or rotate next
I’ll always give you the honest answer — even if that answer is,
“Yep, that one’s done.” 😉
